Kritharoto borrows its name from the type of pasta used to make it called ‘kritharaki’ which also lends the name to the dish. Other names that it comes by is ‘manestera’ on the island of Corfu or Greek households, who love making it up and down the country, often refer to it as ‘giouvetsi’ from the clay pots that are traditionally used to cook the dish in. Many Greek dishes are either tomato or citrus based. Kritharoto and Giouvetsi is a tomato based dish and can be made with any type of meat; chicken, lamb and beef being the most popular but it can also be made with seafood. In this menu the prawns are cooked just long enough to retain their delicious juices and suit beautifully the aromatic tomato sauce and pasta. To my mind the ‘horiatiki’ (or Greek salad as you would probably know it that accompanies the main dish) is perfect and is how we love to eat it in Crete. Topped with creamy cheese and served with small dry barley rusks we call ‘dakos’, think Creatan croutons, which absorb the beautiful juices of the salad and add another texture making this a Greek salad like no other you have tasted. I can’t think of a dish which brings more sunshine to my table than this one.

Kritharoto is a much-loved Greek home cooking dish, inspired by the comforting way families cook rice-style pasta in one pot. Made with kritharaki (Greek orzo), it is gently simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce until the pasta becomes creamy and full of flavour while still holding its shape. It’s a dish rooted in everyday Greek cooking - simple, nourishing, and often served as a complete family meal.

Hero Ingredients

Kritharaki Pasta

A staple of Greek home cooking, kritharaki is a small pasta similar to orzo with a slightly heartier texture. Its shape is perfect for soaking up rich tomato sauces, ensuring every bite is packed with flavour. Comforting and versatile, it's often found at the heart of family meals across Greece.

Raw King Prawns

Sourced from a family-run farm on the Devon coast, these raw king prawns are prized for their sweet flavour and succulent texture. Carefully selected for quality and freshness, they bring a taste of the sea to every dish.

Dakos (Cretan Barley Rusk)

Dakos is a traditional ingredient from Crete, made using barley rusks known locally as kritharokoula. These rusks are twice-baked, creating a hard, rustic bread that softens slightly when topped with fresh ingredients and olive oil. Historically, they were a staple in Greek homes thanks to their long shelf life and practicality when fresh bread wasn’t always available.

Whipped Feta

Odysea whipped feta is a blend of tangy PDO Greek feta and creamy Greek yoghurt made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. The milk comes from herds grazing on wild herbs and native Greek flora, giving it a distinctive aroma, freshness and depth of flavour.
