In Japan, Izakaya is more than just a place to eat and drink. It's a big part of everyday life, kind of like the Japanese version of British pub culture. After a long day, whether you've been working, studying or just out and about, people head to cosy bustling spots to relax, catch up and enjoy good food and drinks with friends or colleagues or family. The word Izakaya pretty much says it all, a place to settle in, have a drink and enjoy the evening.

An Izakaya is a cornerstone of Japanese food culture - a relaxed, informal spot where people gather after work to unwind, eat, drink, and connect. Not quite a bar, not quite a restaurant, it sits somewhere in between, offering a lively, unpretentious atmosphere rooted in the rhythm of everyday life. Izakayas are all about sharing and togetherness: friends, families, and colleagues enjoy small plates like edamame, tsukemono (pickles), yakitori, karaage, tempura, and ebi furai (crispy prawns), often ending with a comforting rice or noodle dish. The food is paired with cold beer, sake or shochu, and the setting is filled with chatter, laughter, and raised glasses. More than just a place to eat, an Izakaya is a celebration of flavour, hospitality and community.

Hero Ingredients

Aonori Seaweed Flakes

Finely dried green seaweed flakes with a fresh, slightly briny ocean flavour and vibrant green colour. A classic Japanese finishing touch, aonori is sprinkled over dishes like okonomiyaki, takoyaki and yakisoba to add gentle umami depth, aroma and that unmistakable street-food look. A simple garnish that instantly lifts flavour and brings authentic Japanese cooking to life.

Beef Fillet Steak

A premium cut prized for its exceptional tenderness and subtle flavour. Sourced from an award- winning family butcher in Wiltshire, the fillet forms the centrepiece of the Wellington, delivering a melt-in-the-mouth texture and restaurant-quality finish.

Raw King Prawns

Sourced from a family-run farm on the Devon coast, these raw king prawns are prized for their sweet flavour and succulent texture. Carefully selected for quality and freshness, they bring a taste of the sea to every dish.

Wakame Seaweed

Wakame seaweed is a classic in Japanese home cooking, loved for its soft texture and naturally savoury umami flavour. It brings a light, ocean-fresh note that balances rich, comforting dishes beautifully. In this menu, it adds an authentic coastal depth that makes every bite feel uniquely Japanese.
