Crispy Chilli Beef, everybody loves crispy chilli beef. My friends are mad for it and my followers are mad for it. Everybody seems to love it and I love it too. What's not to like about crispy chili beef? Crispy slivers of beef doused in a citrusy sticky sauce that goes so well with rice? It's completely addictive. Now, as you know, Malaysian cuisine has a lot of influence from China, from India, because of the immigration that happens a long time ago and where they bring their cultures to. What form is Malaysian cuisine today? And Crispy Chili Beef is one of those. There is these restaurants in Malaysia called by Tao Theis. How means a wok fry. They specialize in lots of what fry dishes and crispy chili beef is one of those dishes. Now, you can't have crispy chili beef without a fry rice. They're just made to be together. And I've created this recipe so that you can have speedy fry rice so that you don't have soggy beef.

While crispy chilli beef is widely known through British-Chinese takeaway culture, it also reflects the strong Chinese influence within Malaysian cuisine. Malaysian cooking has long been shaped by Cantonese and Hokkien communities, who brought with them wok stir-frying techniques and bold sweet-savoury flavour profiles. The result is a style of cooking that celebrates crisp textures, glossy sauces and vibrant chilli heat. This dish sits naturally within that shared culinary heritage of Malaysia’s diverse food culture.

Hero Ingredients

Plum Sauce

Malaysian cuisine takes influences from many of its neighbouring countries. We can see this influence in an ingredient like plum sauce which originally comes from Cantonese cuisine where it's commonly used as a dip for fried dishes like spring rolls, in noodle dishes and as an accompaniment to roast duck.

Beef Bavette Steak

A flavour-packed cut chosen for its deep, beefy taste and satisfying texture, perfect for crispy chilli beef. Sourced from an award-winning family butcher, bavette is prized for its natural grain, which soaks up marinades and delivers bold flavour in every bite. Quickly seared, it stays tender, juicy and full of character.

Jasmine Rice

A staple in Malaysian cooking, jasmine rice is known for its delicate fragrance and soft, fluffy texture. Lightly aromatic with subtle floral notes, it cooks beautifully into separate, tender grains. Simple yet essential, it’s the perfect base that carries and balances rich, flavourful Malaysian dishes.

Sesame Oil

A fragrant finishing oil widely used in Asian cooking, sesame oil adds a rich, nutty aroma and deep savoury warmth. Just a drizzle transforms dishes with authentic flavour, depth, and that unmistakable wok-fried fragrance.
