Pasar malam. What can I tell you about the joys about night market of Malaysia? Pasar malam happens, usually once a week in a particular area, in a town in Malaysia, while in my particular place, my Passa malla happens in Ipoh Garden where we live. Let me paint the scene for you. In a seemingly plain landscape, in a residential area, usually it comes alive during sunset. All the street vendors will start setting up their stores, bringing the atmosphere to life by the noise it creates. My advice is when you visit a Pasar Malam, always wear some loose fitting clothes because it's hot and it's humid. I have a systematic way of going to the Pasar Malam, I have to prepare beforehand. I always do not have lunch nor dinner because I want to try all the foods the Pasar Malam has to offer. We have a systematic way of going down one lane and then packing up again, walking the opposite way, making sure we do not miss any stores at all. It can vary from food stores, clothes stores, tools, toys, fruit or vegetables. I mean, there is an array of stores on offer. Apart from the myriad of smells, it could be charring, it could be steaming, it could be deep frying. I mean, the array of snacks, the array of fruit, but most importantly is the noise. Noise of joyous eating, laughing, chatting, selling. It's so noisy and bustling. But you feel like you're walking through a field of possibilities that you just want to eat everything. Try everything. Buy everything. And it happens once a week. And this box hopefully will bring you the food element of a Pasar Malam. This Pasar Malam box brings you my favorite foods of the Pasar Malam. The Char Keoy Teow, the big wok fry noodles. You can see flames coming out the side. Just the vendors frantically putting ingredients and frantically wokking them at high speeds and then presenting you with these beautiful, silky noodles, down to the steaming Shumai, which is my brother's favourite. He cannot ignore Shumai, be it from the street vendor or from the gourmet dim sum restaurant in Malaysia. He just cannot help himself from buying Shumai. So just bringing you an element of the magic of Pasar Malam from Malaysia through this box. The most common scene of me strolling through Pasar Malam is always having something in my hand, be it a food or drink while pointing out the things I'm going to buy next. And frantically trying to find the money in my pocket to do so so that I don't miss the opportunity that is the joy of going to the Pasar Malam.

Pasar Malam or Malaysian night markets are at the heart of Malaysian food culture, bringing communities together over vibrant street food cooked fresh to order. Rooted in a rich blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences, these bustling markets celebrate bold flavours, sizzling woks and shared eating. From smoky grills to fragrant curries, they reflect Malaysia’s love of food that’s fast, flavourful and made to be enjoyed together.

Hero Ingredients

Kecap Manis

A key ingredient in Malaysian cooking, kecap manis is a thick, sweet soy sauce made with palm sugar for a rich, caramel-like depth. Its glossy, syrupy texture adds both sweetness and umami, creating balance in marinades, stir-fries and sauces. In dishes like rendang, it helps round out bold spices with a deep, savoury-sweet finish that’s instantly moreish.

Raw King Prawns

Sourced from a family-run farm on the Devon coast, these raw king prawns are prized for their sweet flavour and succulent texture. Carefully selected for quality and freshness, they bring a taste of the sea to every dish.

Flat Rice Noodles

Flat rice noodles are the heart of char kway teow, wok-tossed over high heat to soak up smoky soy, chilli and aromatics. Their silky texture and slight chew make every bite rich, glossy and deeply satisfying.

Free Range Chicken

Free-range British chicken from award-winning family butcher, slow-grown and reared to high welfare standards for maximum flavour. Naturally tender and full-bodied in taste delivering juicy, richly flavoured meat with a satisfying depth.
