Rendang is a rich and comforting dish, one that is always synonymous with Malaysian cuisine. It is often prepared for special occasions, celebrations, and ceremonial events such as weddings and festivals. It is slow cooked in coconut milk with kerisik (toasted coconut) added at the end to enrich it. Rendang was brought to Malaysia through migration and trade, where it was adapted and integrated into the local cuisine. It was originally cooked with beef or buffalo and was used as a method of preserving meat.
